Symptom
When you
click the Organize Favorites submenu under Favorites
menu, the Organize Favorites dialog opens, but a Red X
mark may be present where the Favorites list is to be displayed. This happens due
to any of the following reasons:
- Missing Shell Name Space registration.
- Shell Name Space disabled via Manage Add-ons dialog (XP SP2)
- Recent IE cumulative update may have caused this.
Resolution
Step 1
Login as Administrator or equivalent, and type the following command in Start, Run dialog:
regsvr32 /i shdocvw.dll
Step 2
If you've accidentally disabled the Shell Name Space add-on using the Manage Add-ons dialog in Windows XP SP2, re-enable the add-on. (See image). Here is the add-on description.
Shell Name Space
{55136805-B2DE-11D1-B9F2-00A0C98BC547}
ActiveX Control
shdocvw.dll
To launch the Manage Add-ons dialog, follow these steps:
- Start Internet Explorer.
- On the Tools menu, click Manage Add-ons.
- Click the name of the add-on [Shell Name Space]
- Click Enable, and then click OK.
Step 3
If this problem was first seen after installing the MS05-052 - Cumulative update for Internet Explorer, see this page for the solution. There is a script provided in that page to automate the task.
